What is salt chlorination?
Last Updated: 09/01/2010
A Salt system or Electrolytic Chlorine Generator is the easiest, most effective and convenient way to keep your pool water sparkling clean.

A properly sized chlorine generator uses common table salt to produce all the chlorine your pool needs, right in your pool safely, effectively, and automatically.

Same sanitation performance as manual chlorine addition without the drawbacks.
No need to buy, transport and store expensive chlorine compounds.
No more odor, stinging eyes, irritated skin and bleached out swimsuits.

The system uses food grade table salt (sodium chloride), solar salt or water softener salt.

Regardless of which type of salt you chose ensure that it is at least 99% pure salt (NaCl). Never use rock salt (ice melt) or salts that have more than 1% of anti-caking agents, yellow prussiate of soda, or sodium ferrocyanide added as these compounds may cause staining of the pool.

Salt is available from most distributors in 4080 pound bags is added to the pool waterless than a teaspoon of salt per gallon of pool water is all thats required. This is approximately 3,000 parts per million of salt (PPM) where ocean water is approximately 50,000 PPM of salt or less than 1/10th.

A standard size pool will require about 500 Lbs. of salt at start up, a granular salt is used which typically costs about $10 per 50 Lb. bag at your local hardware store.

The salt does not need to be replenished as conventional chlorine additivies must be. So the only time you would need to add salt after the initial start up would be if you had a heavy rain shower which may dilute the concentration of salt or if you had to add water to the pool due to a leak or evaporation.  If this were to occur you would just need to add a couple of cups of salt to the pool to get up to the 3,000 PPM of salt.

As the diluted salt water passes through your pump and filter system the last piece of equipment the water passes through before going back to the swimming pool is the Salt Cell. The salt cell has a stack of titanium plates with a precious metal coating that a DC electrical charge is passed to.  The reaction between this electrical charge and the diluted salt water results in chlorine and sodium which is sent back to your pool, so you are actually manufacturing chlorine for your pool. The by-product of the sodiium is what makes the pool water feel luxurious to your skin.
