Determine gallons of water in a pool
Last Updated: 08/12/2010
First measure the swimming pool. You will need the overall length, width and the depth in both the shallow end and deep end.  For pools with a shallow and deep end, calculate an average depth by measuring the depth in each end and dividing by 2. When a pool is kidney shaped or free form, take several width measurements to get an average width.  You may want to break the pool down into a couple different volume calculations and total them up for simplicity or if you have an extremely large shallow or deep end relative to the pool surface area.

Use the appropriate formula below to calculate the gallons for your pool's shape.

  • Rectangle Pool Area: Average Depth x Length x Width x 7.48 = Volume in Gallons
  • Round Pool: Average Depth x Diameter x Diameter x 5.9 = Volume in Gallons
  • Free Form Pool: Length x Average Width x Average Depth x 7.48 = Volume in Gallons
