In Floor Pool Cleaners
Last Updated: 08/13/2010
The in-floor pool cleaning system is installed in a pool during the construction process.

In general they consist of a series of floor return fittings that are combined into zones.

If you were to follow the plumbing from the pool floor back to the pool equipment you would find that all of the zones come to a central location where the controller or water valve is located.  This valve is driven by a pump that pulls water from the pool and pushes it through a paddle wheel.  That paddle wheel typically drives gears that open the plumbing for each zone one at a time.

As the zone opens at the water valve the water is allowed to pass into the floor returns, called floor cleaning heads.  Typically as the heads lift out of the pool floor they rotate a couple of degrees and as the water valve changes zones the heads drop back to flush with the pool floor and rotate a couple more degrees.

As the water valve changes from station to station the debris in the pool floor is stirred up and thrown around the pool.  The goal being to get the debris floating to the point that the main drain will pick up the debris and remove it from the pool floor.
